| The
Mount Batten Climbing Wall Project
A
small group of local rock climbing providers in and around
Plymouth have been able to secure funding to build a climbing
wall on the natural north facing limestone wall at Mount Batten.
The City Council has given permission for the wall.
The
wall offers a range of climbs some natural and some enhanced
by additional bolt on holds. These will provide introductory,
intermediate
and some challenging routes for those at the higher performance
level.
Entre-Prise
will build the wall and the route setting will be done by
Steve Jones team, who also set up competitions around the
country.
Secure
anchors will be placed sympathetically in compliance with
the site scheduled monument, consents that were necessary.
The wall features split climbs for those who need to practice
changing the belayer on a steep wall and traditional leading
through to a belay at the top. It will have short test pieces
terminating, if you get there, in double lower off
alpine style. Protection is provided by resin staples, common
on European walls. In the central section there is a Via Ferrata
style climb on a ramp which can lead to the top of a 15m abseil
tower. Included in the fittings and fixture are a number of
SRT test pieces for cavers to practice their techniques.
